COMPETENCY OF STANDARD PRECAUTION AMONG REGISTERED NURSES AT MEDICAL, SURGICAL AND ORTHOPEDIC DEPARTMENT IN HOSPITAL PAKAR SULTANAH FATIMAH

Introduction: Health care providers especially nurse should have awareness and strictly adhere to standard precaution (SP) to prevention of infection. This study aims  to evaluated the level knowledge and practice  regarding of the SP in Hospital Pakar Sultanah Fatimah. Methodology: A prospective cross sectional study, a self-administered questionnaire was used and selected universal sampling method, involved the registered nurses worked at Medical, Surgical and Orthopedic department in HPSF, Muar, Johor. SPSS version 22 was used for data analysis. Results and Discussion: Overall the nurses were aged with a mean of 31 years, 6(4.3%) have a degree also 133(95.7%) post basic course. They demonstrated have a better knowledge of the standard precautions. The two lower items of the level knowledge included "hand washing with betadine solution after contact with bloody fluid or infectious" 136(97.8%) and "wear protective mask during aerosolized procedure and handling patients in isolation" 137(98.7%).The three highest practice standard precautions are never recap needles after used before dispose, very often hand hygiene when contact with patient bloody fluids, secretion and decontamination and sweeper should be wear gloves and gown. There was a low and positive or direct correlation between level education and experience years as nurse (P<0.005, r=0.238).  Conclusion: Education of the SP guidelines by nurses, it’s important to highlight and way of preventing occupational infection, protecting patients and healthcare workers. Although registered nurses have high level education and long experiences as nurse, they need to continuous life long learning and good practices  regarding of the SPs. [Disclaimer: Abstract text might vary slightly from what is displayed in the e-poster]
