Description
Figure 33. Schema depicting homology of the components of the mandible in Chilopoda. Depicted exemplars (from top down) are left mandibles (dorso-lateral view) of Scutigera coleoptrata, Eupolybothrus grossipes, Craterostigmus tasmanianus, Otostigmus sp., Mecistocephalus tahitiensis, and Pleurogeophilus mediterraneus. Numbers refer to apomorphic transformations of the gnathal edge: 1, loss of the most proximal pulvillus and molar plate; 2, loss of second pulvillus and multicusped teeth (gnathal edge composed of pectinate lamellae only). For further discussion see text. Drawings of mandibles modified from originals by E. Zamprogno (in Minelli, 2011, except for Mecistocephalus tahitiensis), with permission of the publishers (Brill).
