Description

Saccharodite nanus Zelazny, sp. nov.

(Fig. 333)

Description. Forewings 2.1 times longer than wide, length about 2.9 mm. Colour stramineous; margins of facial carinae brown; frons and a posterior mark on mesonotum reddish; a mark on abdominal tergites bright red; hind femora and thoracic pleura with small orange-red marks. Forewings slightly powdered; clouded with light infuscations around clavus tip, apex of basal median cell, Sc+R fork, base of Ms2, and apical crossveins; veins stramineous, but a section of hind margin near clavus tip and 4 sections of costal margin orange-red; 3 dark spots on base of Sc+R, some fainter spots on veins R and M. Hindwings colourless; a section of claval vein red. In profile junction of vertex and face slightly angulated; subantennal processes not connected to margins of facial carinae; rostrum slightly surpassing post-trochanter. Forewings with Sc+R fork at middle of wing; basal median cell slightly broader than basal cell between Sc+R and M; Ms1 not branched (in holotype right forewing, Figure 333f, but not left forewing, with a supernumeral subcostal sector).

Etymology. The species name is a Latin noun (nanus = a dwarf) used in apposition.

Type material. Holotype ♀ (forewing 2.9 mm), INDONESIA: PAPUA; labels: 1) NEW GUINEA: NETH./ Waris, S. of/ Hollandia, 450–500 m / VIII-24–31-1959 2) At Light 3) T. C. Maa / Collector / BISHOP (BPBM).

Distribution. Island of New Guinea.

Diagnosis. Saccharodite nanus resembles Sa. media sp. nov. (also from New Guinea) in structure and coloration. It can be recognized by the red mark on the abdominal tergites, as well as the more heavily clouded forewings which lack a dark spot near the M-Ms3 fork, but have a conspicuous orange-red section on the hind margin.
