Description
Levu matsumurae ponapeana Fennah, 1956a: 175
(Fig. 277n)
Redescription. Forewings 1.9 times longer than wide, length: male 2.2–2.5 mm (mean = 2.4, n = 9), female 2.5– 2.9 mm (mean = 2.8, n = 10). Colour stramineous to light brown (in some specimens, but not in holotype, light orange-brown); margins of facial carinae and middle of pronotum tinted with orange; fore tibiae and junction of frons and clypeus often distinctly orange and some specimens with scutellum bright orange (but not in holotype). Forewings faintly infuscated from tip of Cu to base of Ms1, around base of Ms2, and along apical crossveins; veins stramineous but some parts of Sc, R, and M orange to orange-brown; base of Sc+ R with 1, rarely with 2 or 3 faint dark spots. In profile junction of vertex and face slightly angulated; subantennal processes well separated from margins of facial carinae. Forewings with venation as in Sa. basipunctulata (Melichar). Male genitalia with apical portion of aedeagus impressed on dorsal side, ending in 2 short lobes.
Etymology. The species name is a latinized adjective (ponapeanus, -a, -um = relating to Ponape).
Type material. Holotype ♂ (forewing 2.4 mm), MICRONESIA: PONAPE ISLAND; labels 1) Ag. Exper. Sta. / Ponape Id. / June–Sept. 50/ P.A. Adams 2) Levu matsumurae / ponapeana/ Fenn. (USNM #62159).
Other material examined. MICRONESIA: PONAPE ISLAND: Colonia, hydroelectric plant, 9.VIII.1946, 3 ♂ 5 ♀, H.K. Townes, R. G. Oakley; Tolotom, VI–IX.1950, 1 ♂, P.A. Adams (all USNM); Palaug, W. Coast, 15 m, 10.I.1953, 1 ♂ 1 ♀, J.L. Gressitt; Mt. Tamatamansakir, 100m, 11.I.1953, 3 ♂ 6 ♀, Gressitt; SE, Nanponmal, 7.I.1953, 1 sex unknown, Gressitt (all BPBM).
Distribution. Ponape Island, Micronesia.
Diagnosis. Saccharodite ponapeana is closely related to Sa. basipunctulata (Melichar) which occurs in Truk and Palau. Although most specimens can be easily distinguished from that species by the orange coloration on head, thorax, and forewing veins, other specimens show no clear differences to Sa. basipunctulata. Sa. ponapeana may, therefore, be a subspecies of Sa. basipunctulata.
