Lejota Rondani 1857
Authors/Creators
Description
281. Lejota Rondani, 1857: 176.
ORIGINALLY INCLUDED SPECIES: None.
FIRST INCLUDED SPECIES: Psilota ruficornis Zetterstedt & Wahlberg in Zetterstedt, 1843 (in Goffe, 1944: 29).
TYPE SPECIES: Psilota ruficornis Zetterstedt & Wahlberg in Zetterstedt, 1843, by subsequent designation (Goffe, 1944: 29; for “ Leiota ”).
CURRENT STATUS: Valid genus [teste Peck (1988: 208)].
FAMILY: SYRPHIDAE.
REMARKS: The authorship of the type species has usually been attributed to Zetterstedt alone (e.g., Peck, 1988: 209). A check of Zetterstedt (1843) shows that both he (page 847) and Wahlberg (quoted on page 848) gave characters to distinguish the species and thus are co-authors of the species. Goffe’s (1944) use of the name “ Leiota ” is no doubt based on his using the Junk 1914 facsimile edition, in which the thick-inked letters do indeed appear to spell “ Leiota ”. The original edition clearly has the name spelled as “ Lejota ”. Although Goffe (1944: 29) designated a type species for “ Leiota ”, we interpret that action here as the same as designating for Lejota Rondani, 1856: 176 since the date and page number he cited refer to that name. Verrall in Scudder (1882: 190) listed the spelling Liota and this was cited as an emendation by Bezzi & Stein (1907: 21, “em. Verr. ap. Scudd. 1882”), but criteria for making this name available as an emendation were not found to be fulfilled in Scudder (1882). Liota Verrall, 1882 is thus an unavailable name, new status.
EMENDATIONS: Liota Bezzi & Stein, 1907: 21 (unjustified).
