OWNERSHIP OF THE KOCHUBEY FAMILY IN BATURYN IN THE XVII–XIX CENTURIES

Description

The purpose of the article lies in comprehensive analysis of the possesions of the Kochubey family in Baturyn, which should be carried out on the basis of written sources and must establish what the Kochubeys owned and what actually formed the wealth of the family; moreover, it is actually to analyze the nature of their management. The scientific novelty of the research is that the history of possessions of the Kochubey family in Baturyn in the XVIIXIX centuries was systematized and analyzed for the first time. There were new obtained new data about the size of profits of this family. Information from previously unknown documents was introduced into scientific circulation. During the publication, general scientific methods of historical research were used.

Conclusions. The author analyzed the property of the Cossack-officer Kochubey family on the Baturyn land by  the possessions of five generations. The ways of receipt of estates were traced. Based on written sources it was established that the first estates in Baturyn were purchased and received for the rank from Hetman Ivan Mazepa by the Secretary General, and later by Judge General Vasyl Leontiyovych Kochubey. The possessions acquired by Vasyl Kochubey were later assigned to his family, wife and two sons, multiplied and inherited or donated. The nature of family management in Baturyn is also analyzed. Usually, family were engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry, which confirms the presence of large areas of hayfields. The forest and the apiary played a supporting role in the family farm. The author determined the level of wealth of the Kochubey family. The study made it possible to establish that the main income of the Baturyn land in the Kochubeys’ posession received from the mill, which provided the proper material condition of the family. Due to the lack of written sources, this topic is not fully disclosed and needs further research.
