Mecidea major Sailer 1952

Description

Mecidea major Sailer, 1952

New state record: Louisiana: Natchitoches Par.: Kisatchie Natl. For., 25-IX-1988, D. A. Rider (2♂♂ DAR).

Distribution: United States: AR, AZ, IL, KS, LA, MN (Koch et al. 2014), MO, NM (Bundy & McPherson 2005, McPherson et al. 2009, Bundy 2012), OK, TX. (Mexico to Nicaragua)

Comments: Van Duzee (1917) listed Mecidea longula from Colorado and Iowa, both of which could apply to this species or to Mecidea minor. He also listed Mecidea longula from several other states (Arizona, New Mexico, Texas), all of which have been substantiated as possibly being this species by additional records. Mead (1988) reported a specimen of this species from Florida, but he indicated that a hurricane had passed through the collection area just a couple days prior to its capture; furthermore, Eger & Dobbs (2010) speculated that this was simply an adventitious capture. Thus, this species should not be considered to occur in Florida, unless further specimens are captured.
