Euschistus obscurus

Description

Euschistus obscurus (Palisot de Beauvois, 1817)

Distribution: United States: AL (McPherson & Sites 1989), FL, GA, LA (Rosewall 1922, McPherson et al. 1982), MS, TX. (Mexico, West Indies)

Comments: Many early workers misidentified this species, listing it under the name Euschistus bifibulus (Palisot de Beauvois). Barber (1927) recognized that the species in the southern United States was different from the true Euschistus bifibulus from the West Indies. He described a new species, Euschistus atromaculosus, for the North American species. Barber & Bruner (1932) placed Euschistus atromaculosus as a synonym of this species. So, all early records of Euschistus bifibulus from the southern United States should be transferred to this species. For example, the record listed above from Louisiana (Rosewall 1922) is under the name Euschistus bifibulus.
