Comments: This species is similar in appearance to some species of the genera Brochymena and Euschistus. It can usually be recognized by the presence of pale markings on the antennae and connexiva, and it has the metathoracic scent glands more elongate and apically acute. Halyomorpha halys was not known to occur in North America at the time of the Froeschner (1988) catalog; it was first recorded from the United States by Hoebeke (2002). Hamilton (2009) also recorded single introductions that were eradicated in Maine and South Carolina, and Rider (2012) reported similar introductions in North Dakota and western Minnesota. Due to the economic importance of this species (it attacks many different crops including both fruits and vegetables, and is a nuisance because it enters people’s homes and buildings), there exists a large body of literature concerning this species, including many reports in the extension literature (brochures and internet reports). This has made tracking all of the individual published state records difficult.
