Description

Butterfly will provide data to advance both weather and climate prediction. This mission is driven by science. Recent research results reveal how small spatial-scale air-sea turbulent heat and moisture fluxes impact regional and global weather, linking <25-km fluxes to atmospheric rivers, California rainfall, and East Coast bomb cyclones. This area of research is very active and 41% of our science citations are from 2017-present. The science community wants these data. Our weather and climate models have advanced beyond our observations - we need this mission. Butterfly will deliver. It uses a proven spacecraft and our experienced multidisciplinary team has an established track record in delivering high-quality instrumentation, data systems, and scientific results. Butterfly's team is committed to open science and our mission is designed as such, bringing a cooperative approach and transparency to enable faster scientific breakthroughs and expand opportunities for unexpected, transformative results.
