Engytatus varians Distant

Description

Engytatus varians (Distant)

Neoproba varians Distant, 1884: 271 (orig. descrip.). Lectotype designated by Carvalho and Dolling, 1976: 809. Cyrtopeltis (Engytatus) varians: China and Carvalho, 1952: 160 (list); Carvalho and Becker, 1958: 333 (comb., distr.). Engytatus varians: Cassis, 1984: 38 (n. comb.).

Diagnosis. General coloration yellow or yellowish green; frons, clypeus, neck, antennal segment I and basal fourth of segment II, apex of cuneus, and spots on femora dark brown to black. Length 3.20–4.20 mm.

Similar to E. modestus in overall coloration, but is distinguished by the dark markings on the head, antennae, and femora and the shape of the male parameres.

Host. Tobacco, Nicotiana tabacum L. [Solanaceae] (Ferreira et al., 2001).

Distribution. Guatemala (Distant, 1884); Brazil (Minas Gerais, Goias, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Pernambuco and Ceará) (Carvalho, 1947b); Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, and Suriname (Schuh, 1995).

Minas Gerais specimens examined. We have not examined any material of this species from Minas Gerais. Because the identity of this species has been confused, all records from Brazil require verification.

Other specimens examined: Lectotype 3 and paralectotype Ƥ, Guatemala, S. Geronimo, Champion (BMNH).
