Description

Data and code for analysis in bioRxiv preprint "Fighting over defence chemicals disrupts mating behaviour". The point at which each data sheet is used in the analysis is specified in the code and code for each respective figure in paper is also given. A renv lockfile is also included for version control.

Notes

Notes on new version: Whilst carrying out a re-analysis we checked for variation in age between treatments and found that it did vary significantly (F=18.79, df=4,62, p<0.001) for females in the ♀(S)C+♂C- treatment, where females were younger than average, and borderline significantly (F=6.89, df=3,52, p=0.075) for females in the ♀C-♂C+ treatment, where females were slightly older than average. Despite the effects of age likely being negligible due to refrigeration* and isolation of each individual (meaning that age was not related to social experience), especially in comparison to treatment effects, potential confounding effects could not be completely ruled out and so we have now dropped the ♀(S)C+♂C- treatment from the analysis and removed the four oldest females from the ♀C-♂C+ treatment. The age of both females and males now does not significantly differ across treatments (female age: F = 1.05, df = 3, 48, p = 0.79; male age: F = 0.56, df = 3, 48, p = 0.643). *At room temperature, adults can live up to 20 days (Bandeili & Müller 2010). We added this information in the method section (line 128-132). When kept only at 5 °C the lifespan expands up to 3 months and their metabolism is strongly reduced. As individuals were kept until the preparation for the bioassays in the fridge (i.e. at 5 °C), we assume that age differences should be negligible.
