ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: 1869a: 13.

TYPE LOCALITY: “ France ” (Macquart 1835: 428) [locality for Dorycera graminum (Fabricius, 1794) sensu Macquart (1835); “ in montuosis alpinis Insubriae et Pedemontii [alpine mountains of Insubria (= Lombardy) and Piedmont (Italy)]” (Rondani, 1869a: 13] [type locality for Macheirocera grandis Rondani, 1869].

PARALECTOTYPES EXAMINED: 1 ♂ (covered by mold, missing head) (MZUF: Box 30): Macheirocera Rndn. / grandis Rndn., Insub. [= Insubria], Pedem. [= Piedmont] / 1588 / Paralectotypus Macheirocera grandis Rond., ♂, desig. det. Á. Soós, 1978; 1 ♀ (missing left mid-leg) (MZUF: Box 30): Macheirocera Rndn. / grandis Rndn., Pedem. [= Piedmont] / 1588 / Paralectotypus Macheirocera grandis Rond., ♀, desig. Á. Soós, 1978 / Dorycera grandis Rond., ♀, det. Á. Soós, 1978; 1 ♀ (MZUF: Box 30): Macheirocera Rndn. / grandis Rndn., Pedem. [= Piedmont] / 1588 / paralectotype Macheirocera grandis Rond., ♀, desig. det. Á. Soós, 1978.

PARALECTOTYPES NOT EXAMINED: 1 specimen (sex not determinable, completely covered with mold) (MHNL: Box 3): [white label] / D. graminum F. / g. Dorycera.

CURRENT STATUS: valid species, as Dorycera grandis (Soós 1984c: 46, Belcari et al. 1995b: 5).

REMARKS: Rondani (1869a: 13) proposed Macheirocera grandis for Dorycera graminum (Fabricius, 1794) sensu Macquart (1835: 428), which he considered a new species. Rondani referred to Macquart’s redescription of Dorycera graminum, which was based on an unspecified number of specimens, and to an unspecified number of specimens of both sexes received from G. De Cristoforis, G. Mussino and L. Bellardi. Therefore, the type material should be in the collections of Macquart (MNHN, MHNL, OUMNH) and Rondani. Soós (1983: 253) designated a lectotype (♂) and paralectotypes (1 ♂, 2 ♀♀) but did not mention an additional specimen in the MHNL (this additional specimen is a paralectotype). No specimen under the name Dorycera graminum is present in either the MNHN (Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle 2020) or OUMNH (Z. Simmons, pers. comm., 2019).
