Baculite sample footage (peak thrust)

Description

Sample video footage used in 3D motion tracking experiments. This 3D-printed model of the orthoconic ammonoid, Baculites compressus, was made positively buoyant. Its buoyant force was designed to be equal to the maximum propulsive thrust of Nautilus pompilius, scaled to the mass of the baculite model. The model reaches ~1.2 m/s after 1 second during this scenario, due to the vertically-streamlined shape of the shell. This footage supplements "Vertical escape tactics and movement potential of orthoconic cephalopods" submitted to PeerJ.
