Distribution. Western Atlantic— USA (Florida), Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea to Brazil (Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Santa Catarina) (Coelho & Ramos-Porto 1987; Rieger 1998; Coelho et al. 2007; Felder et al. 2009; Nucci & Melo 2011).
Remarks. Molecular and morphological analyses supported the differentiation between C. sclopetarius and the congener and sympatric species C. symmetricus, previously distingued based only on their color pattern (Negri et al. 2012). Sequences accession numbers (GenBank): CCDB 2961—16S (JN671523), COI (JN671584) (Negri et al. 2012).
