Description
Dunscaith (also Dun Scaith; Gaelic: Dùn Sgàthaich) is Skye's oldest castle. It was a Norse stronghold and then a castle of the MacLeod clan, who, by the late 1200s, controlled much of the Isle of Skye. It then became the stronghold of the MacDonalds of Sleat. The castle overlooks Loch Eishort on the western side of the Sleat Peninsula, the southernmost peninsula on the Isle of Skye. It sits on an offshore rock, with vertical drops of over 10 metres on all sides. This reconstruction depicts Dunscaith as it was in the 14th century. Note the stone arched bridge and drawbridge.
