Validation of a portable game controller to assess peak expiratory flow against conventional spirometry in children

The game controller we designed represents a novel tool that has proven to be valid compared to spirometry in measuring PEF values in children aged 8-15 years old with a mean bias of -36.4 L/min. The values are reproducible at 96.2% without coaching, suggesting it could be used without supervision and outside the clinical environment. The game controller was highly appreciated by our study participants with up to 78.3% reporting they would use the game if they had it at home. There was insufficient data to evaluate the game controller’s response to bronchodilator. Further studies are necessary to evaluate users’ adherence over time, the validity of the game controller in different situations, and its impact on clinical outcomes, specifically its role in the prevention of asthma exacerbations.
