Description

Rhabdias sp.

Hosts (prevalence; range): L. chaquensis (8/143; 1–2), L. mystacinus (2/8; 1–7), L. podicipinus (13/225; 1–2), P. cuvieri (1/32; 1), R. diptycha (1/21; 3), and S. fuscovarius (2/51; 1–2).

Site of infection: lungs.

Stage: adult.

Type host and type locality: not informed.

Comments: the vast numbers of studies that do not report a specific identification of Rhabdias reflect the difficulty for identification based on morphologic characters (e.g. Hamann et al. 2006; Graça et al. 2017; Tavares-Costa et al. 2019). Conservative characters of Rhabdias spp. and the lack of standardization of terms hinder the identification based only on morphology. Unfortunately, we were unable to conduct molecular analyses with these specimens for specific identification. Leptodactylus mystacinus is a new host for a species of Rhabdias.
