Hyalomma excavatum Koch 1844

Description

8. Hyalomma excavatum Koch, 1844a.

An Afrotropical and Palearctic species whose adults are usually found on Artiodactyla: Bovidae, Suidae and Camelidae; larvae and nymphs are usually found on Erinaceomorpha: Erinaceidae, Lagomorpha: Leporidae, and Rodentia: Dipodidae, Muridae and Sciuridae. Adults and undetermined immature stages have been collected from Galliformes: Phasianidae, while nymphs alone have been recovered from Squamata: Lacertidae (Guglielmone & Robbins 2018, Orkun & Çakmak 2019). Hyalomma excavatum is a frequent parasite of humans.

M: Koch (1844a)

F: Schulze and Schlottke (1929a), under the name Hyalomma anatolicum, as explained in Hoogstraal and Kaiser (1959a) who refer to the paper of Schulze and Schlottke as having been published in 1930

N: Apanaskevich (2003b)

L: Snow (1971), but see note below

Redescriptions

M: Koch (1847), Pomerantzev (1946, 1950) and Hoogstraal and Kaiser (1959a), all under the name Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum, Apanaskevich (2003b), Apanaskevich and Horak (2005), Hosseini-Chegeni et al. (2013), Estrada-Peña et al. (2017)

F: Pomerantzev (1946, 1950) and Hoogstraal and Kaiser (1959a), all under the name Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum, Apanaskevich (2003b), Apanaskevich and Horak (2005), Estrada-Peña et al. (2017)

N: Apanaskevich and Horak (2005), Estrada-Peña et al. (2017)

L: Apanaskevich (2003b), Apanaskevich and Horak (2005), Apanaskevich and Filippova (2007), Estrada-Peña et al. (2017); see note below

Note: contrary to Apanaskevich (2003b) and Apanaskevich and Horak (2005), Snow (1971) states that coxae II and III of the larva of Hyalomma excavatum lack spurs. See also Hyalomma anatolicum for its confusion with Hyalomma excavatum and other species in the genus Hyalomma. There are several redescriptions of Hyalomma excavatum (sometimes under the name Hyalomma anatolicum excavatum) published prior to Apanaskevich (2003b), but most of these have been excluded from the above lists as well as redescriptions under several synonyms of Hyalomma excavatum.
