Description
The study handles the critical edition and investigation of two risālah on the subject of the free will (al-Irāda al-Juzʾiyya). In addition, these two treatises will be translated to be brought to the literature. The first is a semi-summary work entitled “al-Iḥtimālāt al-wāqiʻa
fī afʻāl al-ʻibâd” written by Mūsā ibn Abdullah al-Pahlavānī al-Tōkādī. The second one is the hāshiyah written by Hasan ibn Muhammad el-Rizawiyy on “al-Iḥtimālāt al-wāqiʿa fī afʿāl al-ʿibād” and named “Ḥāshiyah ʿalā İḥtimālāt al-wāqiʿa fī afʿāl al-ʿibād.” In the Ottoman intellectual tradition, in the context of human actions the richness of the literature of the writings of qazā, qadar, efʿāl al-ʿibād, khalq al-ʿamāl, free will (al-Irāda al-Juzʾiyya) kasb, and hāshiyah, iḥtiṣār, sharḥ, taʿlīqāt, zayl which are written on these are known. These two works, which are the subject of examination, are examples of works from this category. The first work attempts to solve the fundamental problem between God’s creation of everything and human freedom through the existence of human will and power. In this brief work, generally, after presenting the existing approaches about human acts and free will is revealed; the wills and deeds of the servants are examined through the effect of Allah’s power on them and the approaches of the sects about this are put forward. In the risālah, different perspectives and supporters are mentioned about issues such as Iḥtiyār and kasb. In addition, the book ends with the thesis that the human will is free in human actions because it is not related to God’s creation. As for the hāshiyah wrote on this risālah, al-Rizawiyy, detailing the sects that al-Pahlavānī mentioned about human acts, accepted some determinations, comments and suggestions, but on the other hand, criticized some of them and tried to revise them.
