Tubicolixa chaetopterana

Description

Tubicolixa chaetopterana (Stimpson, 1860)

Pinnixa chaetopterana Stimpson, 1860: 235.

Material examined. None.

Distribution. Western Atlantic—USA (Massachusetts to Louisiana), Gulf of Mexico, Brazil (Ceará, Rio Grando do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, Bahia, Espírito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul), and Uruguay (Rathbun 1918; Righi 1967; Costa 1969; Williams 1984; Bordin 1987; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Melo 1996, 1998; Coelho 1997; Dall’Occo et al. 2004; Coelho et al. 2008).

Remarks. Previous records in the coast of São Paulo do not mention the specific locality or analyzed material; this occurrence is based on a bibliographic survey (Dall’Occo et al. 2004). Recently, Palacios-Theil & Felder (2020) erected new genera to receive some Pinnixa species and including the genus Tubicolixa in which P. chaetopterana was allocated. This species is a polychaete symbiont, also found in Callichirus spp. and Callianassa spp. burrows (Powers 1977; Abele & Kim 1986; Martins & D’Incao 1996; Coelho 1997; Melo 1998). The host dependency makes this species difficult to sample.
