Description

Clematis cirrhosa Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 544. 1753.

"Habitat in Baetica, arbores operiens & deprimens." RCN: 4028.

Lectotype (Brandenburg in Jarvis & al. in Taxon 54: 469. 2005): [icon] " Clematis altera Baetica " in Clusius, Rar. Pl. Hist. 1: 122, 123. 1601.

Current name: Clematis cirrhosa L. (Ranunculaceae).

Note: Although Qaiser (in Jafri & El-Gadi, Fl. Libya 108: 3. 1984) indicated 712.1 (LINN) as type, and Johnson (Släktet Klematis : 371. 1997) took both it and 712.2 (LINN) as “Typ”, neither collection appears to be original material for the name. Wang (in Acta Phytotax. Sinica 40: 234. 2002) similarly indicated 712.2 (LINN) as type. Sheet 712.1 is probably from Hasselquist, from the Middle East (rather than Portugal), and evidently unavailable to Linnaeus in 1753, and 712.2 is of North African origin.

Brandenburg therefore designated a Clusius illustration as lectotype.
