Description

Panicum alopecuroides Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 55. 1753.

"Habitat in China." RCN: 472.

Replaced synonym of: Alopecurus indicus L. (1774), nom. illeg.

Lectotype (Veldkamp in Cafferty & al. in Taxon 49: 253. 2000): Herb. Linn. No. 80.1 (LINN).

Current name: Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng. (Poaceae).

Note: Chase (in Amer. J. Bot. 8: 48. 1921) discussed the application of the name, suggesting that it "should be restricted … leaving the Chinese specimen as the type (= Pennisetum alopecuroides (L.) Spreng.) but not as Sprengel applied the name". However, her use of the uncertain term “should”, and uncertainty about which of the specimens at LINN she may have intended (80.1 and 80.2 are candidates), means this cannot be accepted as a typification.
