Description

Bromelia pinguin Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 285. 1753.

"Habitat in Jamaica, Barbados." RCN: 2265.

Lectotype (Smith in Phytologia 15: 170. 1967): [icon] "Pinguin, an Bromelia pyramidata, aculeis nigris Plum." in Dillenius, Hort. Eltham. 2: 320, t. 240, f. 311. 1732.

Current name: Bromelia pinguin L. (Bromeliaceae).

Note: Grant & Zijlstra (in Selbyana 19: 96. 1998) argue that B. karatas is the generitype, the choice having been made by Regel (in Gartenflora 17: 67. 1868) which therefore pre-dates the more widely accepted choice of B. pinguin, made by Hitchcock (Prop. Brit. Bot.: 144. 1929).
