Description
Beta vulgaris Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 222. 1753.
"Habitat in Angliae & Belgii littoribus maris." RCN: 1816.
Lectotype (Letschert in Wageningen Agric. Univ. Pap. 93-1: 27, photo 1.1. 1993): Herb. A. van Royen No. 889.213-556 (L).
Generitype of Beta Linnaeus.
Current name: Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris (Chenopodiaceae).
Note: Larsen (in Morat, Fl. Cambodge Laos Viêtnam 24: 91. 1989) wrongly indicated 314.3 (LINN) as type. It lacks a Species Plantarum number (i.e. “1”) and was a post-1753 addition to the herbarium, and is not original material for the name.
