Description
Daucus carota Linnaeus, Species Plantarum 1: 242. 1753.
"Habitat in Europae campis exaridis." RCN: 1944.
Lectotype (Sáenz Laín in Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 37: 487. 1981): Herb. Linn. No. 340.1 (LINN).
Generitype of Daucus Linnaeus (vide Hitchcock, Prop. Brit. Bot.: 139. 1929).
Current name: Daucus carota L. (Apiaceae).
Note: See Wijnheimer & al. (in Taxon 37: 183. 1988) for a detailed account of the typification of this name (though they were unaware that their choice of type had been made earlier). They illustrate the type as their f. 2. Heath (in Taxon 40: 94. 1991) argued that this type choice was invalid but this was refuted by Jarvis (in Taxon 41: 63-64. 1992).
