Description

Pseudosympycnus perornatus Robinson

(Figs 8, 33–35, 41, 58, 59, 69, 73, 86)

Pseudosympycnus perornatus Robinson, 1967: 902, figs 7–9. Type locality: Dominica.

Diagnosis (male). Metepimeron yellow. Femora entirely yellow, except femur III infuscate on dorsal surface of distal half. Tibia I not strongly compressed (only slightly thicker than tibiae II and III) (Fig. 41). Tarsus I (Fig. 58) entirely brown: It 1 compressed and trapezoidal, with dorsal crest bearing fringe of setae increasing in size towards apex; It 2 with 1 anterodorsal hook-like seta arising from a dorsal projection and directed backwards, and with 3 curved setae, with apical crest bearing long setae. Tarsus II: IIt 1 with anteroventral row of short setae continued from tibia II (Fig. 69). Tarsus III (Fig. 59): IIIt 3 with 4 posterior setae as long as podomere length, the 2 basalmost stronger and curved at apex; IIIt 4 with posterior row of long, fine setae.

Type material. PARATYPE Ƌ, labelled: “ Fond Figues River / Dominica, BWI / March 17, 1964 ” “ Paratype Ƌ / Pseudosympycnus / perornatus / H. Robinson ” (NMNH); PARATYPE Ƌ: “ North Deux Dleau / Dominica, BWI / Feb 14, 1964 ” “ Paratype Ƌ / Pseudosympycnus / perornatus / H. Robinson ” (NMNH). PARATYPE ♀, labelled: “ Boeri Lake Trail / Dominica, BWL / Feb 22, 1964 ” “ Paratype ♀ / Pseudosympycnus / perornatus / H. Robinson ” (NMNH).

Remarks. This species is unique in the genus by the modifications in the male tarsomere 1 of leg I (see above). Robinson’s (1967) original description states that most of the legs, including femora, are pale. Nevertheless the two male paratypes examined here have femur III infuscated on distal half, while the female has an entirely pale femur.

Distribution. Dominica (Fig. 86).
