High Emotional Intelligence is Associated with Lower Medical Student Burnout in the Clinical Year

Description

Mental health among health care professionals, including medical students, is an area of concern due to the high levels of stress that these individuals face daily. Burnout is a state of emotional, cognitive and physical exhaustion caused by extreme or sustained stress. The prevalence of medical student burnout is extremely high (up to 50%), and burnout itself has been implicated in the delivery of sub-optimal patient care. Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been found to predict burnout in nurses, residents, and physicians, but there continues to be a gap in knowledge about the association between EI and burnout among medical students. The purpose of this study was to describe the association between EI and burnout in medical students attending a US medical school.
