Description

This method aims to plot the distribution and location of use-wear data, using basic GIS methods. This short tutorial explains how to create and edit the GIS templates for lithic use-wear analysis, using free and open-access software for image editing and GIS analysis. The aim of this tutorial is to introduce the template, facilitate its use and editing, and at the same time encourage colleagues to feed this work with new templates, including new tool types.
The method and GIS templates are based and deeply inspired by the work of Orton, D. C. (2010). A new tool for zooarchaeological analysis: ArcGIS skeletal templates for some common mammalian species. Internet Archaeology, (28). (https://intarch.ac.uk/journal/issue28/4/toc.html). Similar concept, method and workflow are here applied on mapping use-wear on lithic tools.
