Facts on Bear Bile Use in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

Introduction In Malaysia, approximately 69% of Traditional Chinese Medicine outlets were reported to be possibly selling bear parts and derivatives in 2018. In 2020, China’s National Health Commission issued a guideline outlining the use of an injection named “Tan Re Qing”, consisting of bear bile powder and other herbs, to treat critically ill SARS-CoV-2 infected patients, raising concerns on animal cruelty and increased illegal poaching.

Objective To conduct a rapid review on the efficacy and safety of bear bile in COVID-19 treatment.

Conclusion Although there is insufficient published clinical evidence on bear bile, safety of its main chemical compound UDCA is well established. Further research is required to determine its supportive role in COVID-19 treatment as preclinical evidence shows potential viral suppression and anti-inflammatory effects.
