Description

The following study consists in a literature review that aims to understand the perspective of incarcerated women during the experience of childbirth and maternity while serving the sentence. Eleven empirical articles, from 2008 to 2019, found in the Scielo and PEPSIC databases and the survey of Penitentiary Information by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice were analyzed. According to the reviewed studies, it is evident that motherhood in the context of incarceration is involved in events that violate the rights of women in prison. The results demonstrate that, in addition to structural and institutional actions, subjective aspects related to the human development of the mother and children, such as bonding and attachment, perception of care and well-being, must be taken into account for the proper execution of legal determinations regarding female incarceration. Finally, it is recommended to conduct further research in this area with the objective of building knowledge, public policies and efficient intervention.
