Description
Proarna insignis Distant, 1881a
Proarna albida var. insignis Distant 1881a: 12. (Nicaragua)
REMARKS. This species can be variable in size (body lengths 20–24 mm) even within a single population. Small specimens approach P. strigicollis Jacobi, 1907 but the wings are proportionately shorter. Body coloration is variable within the species ranging from green to brown marked with piceous forming a well-camouflaged animal in its natural habitat. Specimens often exhibit a longitudinal piceous or dark brown facia on the dorsal head and prothorax. The fore wings venation is almost complete in exhibiting macular infuscation. The species is associated with grasses in the cloud forests within the lower levels of the Yungas floristic province in Argentina (Sanborn et al. 1995a; 2011a). The endothermy exhibited by the species (Sanborn et al. 1995a) permits activity without access to solar radiation in this habitat. The species is commonly collected at lights with a heavy female bias (Young & Sanborn 2015).
DISTRIBUTION. The species has an extensive range across the Neotropics with records from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panamá, Peru, and Venezuela (Metcalf 1963a; Duffels & van der Laan 1985; Sanborn 2011a; 2013; 2014a; 2018b; 2019b; Sanborn & Maes 2012; Maes et al. 2012; Sanborn & Heath 2014). The species has been reported from Vilcanota, Juanjui, Pachitea, and the upper reaches of the Purus River in Peru (Jacobi 1907; 1951).
