Description

In this white paper, CASCA’s EPO committee proposes a paradigm shift in the view of the Canadian Astronomical Society regarding its EPO efforts.  Historically, because “EPO” is a very broad term, and because CASCA EPO is done primarily at the grass-roots level, and because CASCA EPO should touch a large variety Canadian demographics, it has been well nigh impossible for the CASCA Board to give consistent overarching meaningful direction to its EPO committees over the years, both ideologically and financially.  For LRP2020, this EPO Committee proposes a way forward by focusing on National Projects.

Recommendation: The Canadian Astronomical Society fully support its current and future EPO committees in executing four NATIONAL EPO ‘Pillar Projects’:

  1. Digital CASCA  (e-CASCA)
  2. Discover the Universe / À la découverte de l’univers  (DU)
  3. IAU initiated National Activities (N-IAU)
  4. Westar Lectureship  (CWL)

A full description of what comprises these ‘living’ National Pillar Projects, why they are needed, and a suggested plan for executing these projects to their maximum potential, including funding and coordination, is the purpose of this white paper.
