Description

Genus Capitolichus Gaud & Atyeo, 1975

Type species: Capitolichus tetroplourus Gaud & Atyeo, 1975, by original designation.

The genus is currently composed of five species, including the new one described below, associated with New World barbets (Piciformes: Capitonidae), and suboscine passerines (Passeriformes: Cotingidae and Tyrannidae) (Gaud & Atyeo 1975, Alzuet et al. 1988): C. tetroplourus Gaud & Atyeo, 1975 from Eubucco bourcierii (Lafresnaye, 1845), C. biemarginatus (Mégnin & Trouessart, 1884) from Capito auratus (Dumont, 1805) (Capitonidae), C. pyroderi (Mégnin & Trouessart, 1884) from Pyroderus scutatus (Shaw, 1792) (Cotingidae), and C. pitangus Alzuet et al., 1988 from Pitangus sulphuratus bolivianus (Lafresnaye, 1852) (Tyrannidae). The new species described herein is the first one of this genus from a host of the family Picidae (Piciformes).
