Description
Genus Gabucinia Oudemans, 1905
Type species: Pterolichus delibatus Robin, 1877 (in Robin & Mégnin), by original designation.
The genus currently comprises three valid species, including the new one described below, all of them associated with passerines of the family Corvidae (Gaud & Atyeo 1975): Gabucinia delibata (Robin, 1877) described from Corvus corone Linnaeus, 1758 and recorded from many other corvids of the genera Corvus Lin- naeus, Coloeus Kaup and Pica Brisson across the Holarctic region (Canestrini & Kramer 1899; Radford 1953, 1958; Gaud & Till 1961; Jones 1968; Gaud & Atyeo 1975; Kapoor & Kaur 1975; Mironov 1996, 1997; Zamec & Fenda 2012; Galloway et al. 2014, Negm & Hassan 2019), and G. gladiscapulata Gaud, 1960 from Corvus albicollis Latham, 1790 in Africa (Gaud 1960). One more species, Gabucinia urogalli (Nörner, 1883), described from the western capercaillie Tetrao urogallus Linnaeus, 1758 (Galliformes: Phasianidae) in Europe, has also been referred by Dubinin (1956) to this genus. This host association is quite uncommon for mites of the genus Gabucinia; until this species is re-examined, either from the type specimens or those recollected from the type host, it is reasonable to treat it as a species inquirenda. An undetermined species of Gabucinia was reported on Milvago chimango chimango (Vieillot, 1816) (Falconidae) from Chile (Órdenes et al. 2005), but this is quite certainly a genus misidentification.
