CONTENT OF TEACHING SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL TRANSLATION: PROCESS-BASED ASPECT

Description

Content of teaching scientific and technical translation, in particular its process-based aspect, is a dynamic category which needs reviewing and updating.

Article’s purpose: To describe the process-based constituents of the content of teaching scientific and technical translation to students majoring in specialty 035 «Philology», specialization 035.041 «Germanic languages and literatures (including translation) English as the first language» through the components of the appropriate competence.

Methodology: Analysis and systemization of academic papers related to translation teaching methods.

Scientific novelty: The extended structure of the process-based content of teaching scientific and technical translation through the competence approach has been suggested for the first time.

Conclusion: Within the bilingual competence, there have been highlighted sub-skills and skills of translator’s reading, dialogical / polilogical speech in intermediary translation situations; sub-skills in handling lexical, grammatical and lexical-stylistic material. Skills in creating secondary texts of science and technology related genres correlate with the text-typology competence; sub-skills in using background and subject-matter knowledge and skills in communicating with professional communities’ representatives – with the exstra-linguistic one. Operational competence covers skills in performing full, summary / abstract and fragmentary translation, as well as applying translation techniques and transformations; IT competence – sub-skills and skills in using general- and professional-purpose ICT tools; learning-strategic competence – skills in applying learning, communicative and translation strategies; personal competence – translator’s aptitudes as well as intellectual, social-communicative and technological skills. All the components are complemented with appropriate procedural knowledge.
