Effects of Type-4 Wind Turbine on present protection relaying algorithms

Description

Type 4 wind turbinespresent the advantage offully decouplingthe behavior of the generator from grid disturbances, whichhelps thiswind turbinetopologyto reach the compliance of international grid codes during grid disturbances. Thus, they arebecoming one of the most employed topologies for all new wind turbines installed in the power system, and their penetration isexpected to be evenincreased.

Considering such circumstance, potential problems or limitations of present protection algorithmsin the case of high penetration of this type of renewable energies generation sources into the gridhave been assessed within Work Package 4 of EU fundedMIGRATE-Massive InteGRATion of power Electronic devicesProject. To perform the mentioned analysis, an ad-hoc type 4 wind turbinemodelhas been developed in Real-Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) platform, including algorithms for Grid Code accomplishment(Tennetgrid code has been implementedin the control system forthis study[1])and independent controls for positive and negative sequence current. The control of the wind turbineis able to limit the negative sequence current even in the case of asymmetrical faultsThe objective of developing such detailed RTDS model isto applyhigh fidelityHardware In the Loop (HIL) testsin laboratoryto real protection relays from different vendorsin order to investigate their behaviour.

To analyzepresentpotential relays’limitations, mass tests for three different protection functions(distance, line differential and ground directional overcurrent)[2]areapplied in order to comparethe behavior of the aforementioned functionsin high renewable generation penetration scenarios with thatagainst the samedisturbances in a 100%-synchronous generation-scenario.

This paper showsthe conclusions andthe results obtained in the tests applied to fourdifferent vendors(called in this document A, B, C and D).
