E16 whole thickness gut scan

Confocal scan through wholemount preparation of E16.5 rostral small intestine. Immunohistochemistry was performed against Tuj (red), which labels the myenteric and submucous neuron layer. Note that also some cells in the epithelium are Tuj positive.  Since some enteroendocrine cells in the gut epithelium express synaptic markers such as synapsin and PSD95, it is possible that these also express neuronal tubulin. Cellular and tissue structure can be observed by cells’ autofluorescence (yellow) and collagen fibres (blue). ep = epithelium, sm = submucosa, cm = circular muscle, mp = myenteric plexus.
