Gomphia Schreb

Description

Gomphia Schreb.,

Gen. Pl.: 291. 1789 - Type (designated here): Ochna nitida Sw., Prodr.: 67. 1788 = Gomphia nitida (Sw.) Vahl, Symb. Bot. 2: 49. 1791 - Lectotype (designated here): Jamaica, 1778, Roger Shakespear s.n. (BM barcode BM000757788). - For an image of the lectotype, see http://www.nhm.ac.uk/research-curation/scientific-resources/collections/botanical-collections/botany-specimen-database/?action=display&irn=4987930&ColSubDepartment=Flowering

Thus typified, Gomphia falls into the synonymy of Ouratea Aubl. 1775 and is no longer a potential threat to Campylospermum Tiegh. 1902, the currently used name of an Old World (mainly African) genus of ca. 65 species. So Campylospermum appears to be safe-unless and until someone finds out that it is antedated by and synonymous with Philomeda Thouars 1806, at which point a conservation proposal will hopefully be submitted. But that topic is, understandably, beyond the scope of the present note.
