Colletes edentuloides Kuhlmann 2011

Description

Colletes edentuloides Kuhlmann, 2011

(Figs. 1 a–d)

Colletes edentuloides Kuhlmann in Kuhlmann & Proshchalykin 2011: 23.

The male of C. edentuloides has been unknown and is here described for the first time.

Diagnosis. The male of C. edentuloides is very similar to the ones of C. daviesanus Smith, C. edentulus Noskiewicz and C. pauljohni Kuhlmann. In all species S7 (Fig. 1 a) and the gonostylus (Fig. 1 b) are largely identical. Colletes daviesanus and C. edentulus differ from the other two species by the much more dispersed and slightly finer punctation of their metasomal terga (i = 0.5–1.0d) with the surface between punctures smooth and shiny. In C. edentuloides (Fig. 1 c) and C. pauljohni punctation is usually much denser and coarser giving a less shiny impression. Differences between the latter two species are subtle: In C. edentuloides punctation of T1–3 are slightly finer but more clearly delimited so punctures appear to be much more clearly visible, particularly on T2–3 (Fig. 1 d). The apical tergal hair bands of T 1–2 in C. edentuloides are laterally about 1.5–2 times broader than medially while in C. pauljohni they are only marginally broader, particularly on T2.

Description: Male, BL=7.5–8.0mm; head obviously broader than long, HW:HL=53:39; gena narrower than eye in lateral view, GW:EW=7:12; width of metasoma narrower than that between tegulae, MtW:TW=47:55. Antenna short, extending to scutellum, first flagellomere nearly as long as broad, 1.0 times as long as second flagellomere, second flagellomere longer than broad, nearly 1.5 times as long as broad, flagellomeres 3–11 roughly 1.5 times as long as broad and nearly equal to each other in length; malar area medially about 1/2 long as width of mandible base; facial fovea shallow and narrow, only half as wide as antennal flagellum; propodeum laterally covered with sparse long erect hairs, integumental sculpture completely visible; disc of scutum and scutellum shiny, with denser punctation, i=0.2–0.5d; disc of T1 densely and coarsely punctate, i=0.2–0.5d (Fig. 1 d); sloping anterior and lateral anterior parts of T1 covered with erect long white plumose hairs, and disc of T1–T2 covered sparse long white plumose hairs (Figs. 1 c, 1d); the apical hair bands on T1–2 laterally about 1.5–2.0 times broad than medially (Fig. 1 c). S7 large and broad, apical margin with rounded incision (Fig. 1 a); gonostylus long and thin (Fig. 1 b). Antennal flagella ventrally black or blackish brown; all legs black except for distitarsi blackish brown. Face covered with dense long white plumose hairs; vertex, scutum and scutellum covered with dense long paler white plumose hairs; gena and mesepisternum covered with long white plumose hairs.

Material examined: China, Inner Mongolia: 3♀♀, 1♂, Tomortei (113º06′E 41º48′N), 5–27.VIII.1971; Jilin: 3♀♀, 2♂♂, Erdaobaihe (128º06′E 42º24′N), (Asteraceae), 1♂, (Melilotus officinalis), 30.VII.1981, Yan-Ru Wu; 1♀, 1♂, Erdaobaihe (128º06′E 42º24′N), (Vicia unijuga), 31.VII.1981, Yan-Ru Wu; 1♀, 4♂♂, Erdaobaihe (128º06′E 42º24′N), (Asteraceae), 3–5.VIII.1981, Yan-Ru Wu.

Floral association: Asteraceae gen. et sp., Vicia unijuga (Fabaceae), Melilotus officinalis (Fabaceae).

General distribution: * China (Inner Mongolia, Jilin), Mongolia.

Remark: All previously from Mongolia reported females of C. edentulus (Kuhlmann & Dorn 2002; Kuhlmann & Proshchalykin 2013b) in fact belong to C. edentuloides.
