Description

Sobarocephala secaperas spec. nov.

Fig. 28

Description (Fig. 28). Male. Body length 3.4mm. Arista densely plumose on basal 2/3. Setae brown. Ocellar seta absent. Presutural intra-alar seta absent. Two dorsocentral setae with slightly developed setula in front of anterior dorsocentral. Acrostichal seta absent. Mid fronto-orbital 2/3 length of other fronto-orbitals. One long lateral scutellar seta. Head yellow (light yellow below antenna) with ocellar spot and dorsal stripe on first flagellomere brown; gena pilose. Notum brown behind level of postpronotum. Pleuron light yellow with anepimeron (excluding ventral margin) and oblique stripe on anepisternum brown. Legs yellow with narrow brownish medial band on hind tibia, and basal half of femora and coxae light yellow. Halter white. Wing dusky. M1+2 ratio 3.1. Abdomen brown with sclerites past segment 6 yellowish-orange.

Female. Unknown.

Male terminalia. Not dissected. External genitalia resembling those of S. vockerothi except surstylus slightly larger with posterior margin broader.

Variation. Paratype in poor condition, with most setae missing and colouration difficult to discern, but brown portion of scutum apparently with yellow anteromedial emargination.

Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin and Greek words for “different” and “extremity/end” (respectively); this refers to the male terminalia, which is characteristically paler than the remainder of the abdomen and most of the notum.

Holotype: THAILAND. N Thailand, 1100m, Chiang Mai Prov., Doi Suthep-Pui N.P., What Phrathat, 18.80N / 98.92E, 19.x.2000, Merz & Schwendinger (1♂, MHNG).

Paratype: LAOS. Vientiane Prov.: Ban Van Eue, 15–31.v.1965, Native Collector, Bishop (1♂, BPBM).

Comments. Sobarocephala secaperas is superficially similar to S. cycla, but the setae are brown, the wing is dusky, the face is pale, the ocellar seta is absent, tergite 1 is brown, the surstylus is long and subtriangular and the terminalia are yellowish-orange.
