Description

Chlaenius (Chlaeniellus) pseudotristis Chanu & Swaminathan sp. nov.

(Figs. 14, 28, 42, 57, 71, 98, 99 & 113)

Type series. Holotype: 1♂, 09.v.2015, RCA Campus, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India, 579.5m (24°34’ N Latitude 73°42’ E Longitude), N.Y. Chanu (white label), Chlaenius (Chlaeniellus) pseudotristis Chanu & Swaminathan 2016 HOLOTYPE (red label). The holotype is deposited in the Reference Chamber of the Insect Museum, Kushwaha Keet Sangrahalaya (KKS), Department of Entomology, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur, Rajasthan, India.

Diagnosis. Elytra black with greenish bluish tinge, no fasciae or spots, intervals punctate pubescent; pronotum wider than long, rounded lateral sides, surface confluently coarsely punctate with wrinkles, few setiferous punctures here and there; median tooth of mentum truncate at apex with rounded angles; labrum slightly emarginate at apex; apical segment of maxillary and labial palpi sub-cylindrical and coniform respectively; aedeagus stout, median lobe almost cylindrical, lamella rounded at apex, both sides of median lobe equally tapers towards apex.

Description. BL = 13.02 mm, HW= 2.60 mm, PL= 2.74 mm, PW= 3.80 mm, EL= 7.68 mm, EW= 5.84 mm

Head and pronotum black with greenish reddish iridescence; elytra black with greenish bluish tinge. Labrum, mandibles, coxae, trochanters and femora dark brown; first 3 antennomeres and tibia pale yellowish brown; remaining antennomeres, maxillary and labial palpi brown. Ventral sternites fuscous.

Head dorsal surface confluently coarsely punctate (small punctures); frontal fovea shallow. Labrum slightly emarginate at apex, apical angles rounded with some setae; clypeus slightly emarginate. Apical segment of maxillary and labial palpi sub-cylindrical and coniform respectively, almost dorsoventrally flattened and slightly tapering towards and truncate at apex. Median tooth of mentum truncate at apex with rounded angles.

Pronotum quadrate, wider than long, rounded along lateral margins, surface confluently punctate with wrinkles, few punctures with setae here and there, more at basal region; lateral margins bordered, explanate margin rather gently reflexed and increasing in width from apex to base. Basal margin wider than anterior margin; basal angles obtuse but not sharp, apical angles rounded. Median line fine and distinct but do not reach extremities. Basal fovea rounded and deep.

Elytra striate punctate; intervals punctate, pubescent and almost flat.

Prosternum, proepisternum very finely punctate almost smooth; prosternal process bordered; mesosternum and mesepisternum finely and uniformly punctate; metasternum smooth medially, punctate laterally; metepisternum punctate. Abdominal sternites very finely punctate, almost smooth.

Aedeagus stout, almost cylindrical; median lobe gradually bent near base; apex of apical lamella rounded; both sides of median lobe equally tapers towards apex on dorsal view; length of apical lamella very short.

Remarks. This species appears similar to C. tristis; but it differs in having more regular, rounded lateral sides of the pronotum, less pubescence on surface and the presence of wrinkles; the colour of the head, pronotum and elytra is black with a greenish tinge, and antennomeres 1 to 3 are pale yellowish brown, the others are brown.

Etymology. The name of the new species explains the false resemblance with the species Chlaenius (Chlaeniellus) tristis.
