Galaxy-targeted follow-up for discovery of electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave events
Description
The detection of GW170817 by Advanced LIGO triggered electromagnetic follow-up by ground and space-based observatories which led to the detection of coincident short-lived gamma-ray and longer lasting kilonova emission ~2kpc from the centre of host galaxy NGC4993. Two of the main observational challenges are the very large localisation regions from ALIGO/Virgo and the swiftly decaying transients expected from Neutron Star - Neutron Star and Black Hole - Neutron Star mergers. Many wide-field survey telescopes and telescope networks have employed a tiling strategy, whereby their large field of view and network capabilities allow for a large localisation region to be tiled. Narrow field telescopes cannot efficiently employ these tiling strategies. For such telescopes, a galaxy-targeted strategy has several advantages, the primary one being the reduction in the number of pointings required by a factor of 10-100. I will present a public web interface, that includes implementation of a galaxy-ranking algorithm, to assist astronomers conducting galaxy-targeted follow-up of gravitational wave events by providing a rapidly available public list of targets soon after a trigger.
