Description

The study measured the concentrations of radionuclides in oil contaminated soils around transformer installation areas in Ile-Ife, Nigeria to determine the health burden of the analyzed nucleotides. Oil contaminated and uncontaminated (control) soils were collected at 0-15cm and 15-30cm depths and analysed for radionuclides using Gamma ray spectrometry. Results obtained were interpreted in terms of its absorbed dose rate, annual equivalent dose rate, internal hazard index, external hazard index, radium equivalent and annual gonadal dose equivalent. The study concluded that the radionuclides in the oil impacted soils were within the permissible limits though the chronic daily dosage was significant to cause health hazards to humans. The study established a baseline data of primordial radionuclides for the study areas. It is therefore recommended that in the installation of high voltage transformer at any location, precautionary measures should be put in place during installation of transformer to avert contamination of environmental systems.
