Blindness has been recognised as an important public health problem in India. Visual impairment is one of the major socio-economic issues in India. There is an urgent need for awareness among educators, policy makers, parents and the disabled people among visual impairment. This paper presents a brief summary about the prevailing general situation of the visually impaired people and their educational Needs in the country. Emerging needs for the visually impaired also discussed.
