Description
In the past, only technically adept users were able to discover the existence of third-party tracking tools on sites they visited or whether these sites honored opt-out and Do Not Track requests, though research has shown that this is a widespread concern in the total online population. TrackingCookie.info provides a browser extension that immediately shows users this information in a visual and easy-to-read format, collated from a new and automated data structure.---We built a cloud-based crawling infrastructure (that runs on Amazon EC2) to gather http traffic, cookies, javascripts API calls, etc., and generate a database -- previously this data existed only as snapshots. Also, our data tracks whether web sites honor opt-out and Do Not Track requests by removing its tracking cookies. All this data is then made available in visual and easy-to-read form for users through our browser extension.---Non-technical users concerned with whether and how they are being surveilled but lacked the technical expertise. In addition, this increases the population practicing surveillance, leading perhaps to an improved environment for personal information security and privacy.
