Description

Commons Data Weaver is a free, open-source web application for Wikimedia Toolforge that helps contributors enrich files on Wikimedia Commons with structured metadata. It adds depicts statements (Wikidata property P180), categories, geographic locations and links between similar files ("Other versions"), either for one file at a time or for a whole category in bulk. Edits are made under the user's own Wikimedia account and are tagged #DataWeaver, so they can be traced and reviewed by the community.

The tool began as a Commons user script for biodiversity image tagging and has grown into a general-purpose tool for improving Commons as a knowledge base. This release is the web application version, with the same grid, batch panel, one-by-one view and edit log as the script.

Main features

- Depicts (P180): Wikidata search, batch add and remove, subject suggestions drawn from categories.
- Categories: combined Commons search and suggestions from the related Wikidata item.
- Location: coordinates, map pin and Wikidata place search, applied to many files at once.
- Series and Other versions: grouping of photos of the same subject with suggestions, a warning when uploaders differ, a collage view and cross-links between files.
- Captions, image notes, stars, sorting and filtering, a word cloud and frequency table of depicts, JSON and CSV export, and an edit log.
- Project hashtags in edit summaries.

Web application

- Wikimedia login through OAuth 2.0 with PKCE. Tokens are kept on the server, encrypted, and never reach the browser.
- A settings gear for the interface language and typing tools (jQuery IME), with a localisation framework ready for more languages.
- Documentation pages: About, Features, Technology, Story and Workflows, Community, Credits, How to Use and Privacy.
- Privacy by default: no third-party assets, and OpenStreetMap place search is off until a user switches it on.

Technology
Python (Flask) back end; plain JavaScript front end; Wikimedia Action, Wikibase and OAuth APIs; jQuery and jQuery IME; SQLite sessions; pytest and Playwright tests; deployed with the Toolforge Build Service.
