HIOF • P-II: Not Probability — Paper VI Born Weights Are Not Probabilities
Description
Holographic Information Ontological Framework: Probability II (HIOF P-II)
Not Probability: Conceptual Engineering of Classical Probability and Quantum Docking
This is a short, non-technical companion to the 8-paper HIOF P-II series (Papers 0 to VII). It is written for readers in physics, philosophy of science, or statistics, not for readers already familiar with the author's wider framework.
The core idea, stated plainly
The series asks when the word probability may be used. It reserves the word for a classical probability layer in which four conditions hold: a sample space is given before outcomes are examined; every read-out under discussion is a function on that one space; the space does not depend on the means used to reveal outcomes; and each preparation fixes a definite measure. This qualification belongs to a window, the family of measurements that present capacity can manifest.
Quantum docking and docking weights
A docking is a relation among a system, an interference end (instruments, couplings, records) and a docking arrangement. The range of marks that can become manifest, the manifest margin, is produced by that relation. The numbers given by the Born rule are called docking weights. Every standard computation is kept. A term-swap test confirms that replacing the word changes no value or equation.
Where qualification holds and where it fails
Compatible read-outs, coarse-grained classical windows and the single-photon polarisation family have a common representation. Windows with Bell-type settings or Kochen-Specker-type configurations have none under stated premises (local causality, setting independence, non-contextuality). Models that give up a premise supply a space that depends on the settings.
Windows, chains and consciousness
Windows are compared by statistical post-processing. A chain from instrument to person to group combines channels, which only lose information, with selection, which also distorts the source. Consensus needs a non-trivial common read-out. Uncertainty that cannot be repeated is called window-relative uncertainty, not probability. Conscious knowing is treated as uptake after docking, never as part of it.
Potential, determinism and consensus
Potential is the inheritance of conditions of formation, not a table of stored answers. A deterministic generation rule and classical qualification are independent questions, shown with Schrodinger's unpublished hidden-variable model (a preprint, not yet peer reviewed). Coupling, transaction and consensus are kept as three separate layers.
What the series covers
-
Paper 0: the right to use probability (series introduction)
-
Paper I: classical probability, boundaries precede means
-
Paper II: quantum docking
-
Paper III: inside the system: windows, comparability, window chains, exclusion
-
Paper IV: non-transactional quantum: coupling, transaction, consensus
-
Paper V: determinism is not probability
-
Paper VI: Born weights are not probabilities
-
Paper VII: reality as manifestation, with a worked comparison of two windows
What the series does not do
It does not change the Born rule, add new dynamics, decide between interpretations of quantum mechanics, or claim that space is discrete or continuous. Whether the universe is deterministic is left open.
A note on method
Each paper states its premises, its scope and its test points. The naming discipline is a terminological proposal, not a theorem of probability theory. Readers are encouraged to treat the proposals as testable hypotheses, not as settled fact. All papers are Version 1.0.
