Evolving Lineages, Changing Networks: A Comparative Framework for Biological Organisation and Continuity

Authors/Creators

Description

Evolution changes more than individual organisms. As inherited capabilities develop, organisms establish new relationships, modify their environments and create conditions that influence subsequent evolutionary opportunities. Understanding these interconnected changes requires considering biological descent, ecological interactions and functional organisation together.

This paper introduces a comparative three-map framework for investigating evolutionary development across the biological substrate. The framework combines:

1. Lineage histories, representing ancestry and inherited evolutionary change across generations.

2. Ecological networks, representing interactions among biological entities at particular periods.

3. V–H–S functional organisation, representing how biological functions depend on individual capabilities (V), biological relationships (H) and external scaffolding (S).

Together, these complementary representations provide a model capable of accommodating evolutionary histories, changing ecological relationships and the development of functional organisation without treating them as interchangeable processes.

Six biological examples illustrate the framework: Trinidadian guppies, sea otter–urchin–kelp interactions, snowflake yeast, aphid–Buchnera symbiosis, lichens and honeybee colonies. These cases highlight inherited adaptation, ecological reorganisation, emerging collective individuality, symbiotic integration and different routes through which biological organisation persists or is reconstructed.

The paper also proposes comparative approaches for investigating reciprocal evolutionary development, including how inherited capabilities enable new relationships and scaffolding, and how these arrangements may subsequently influence evolutionary opportunities.

The framework is conceptual and reports no new empirical dataset. Its contribution is a common analytical structure for investigating how organisms, their relationships and their supporting environments develop together across evolutionary time.
