Financing Future Demand: AI Investment Booms and Financial Amplification

Description

The AI investment boom brings capital spending forward against expected future demand. This paper applies financial-accelerator and credit-cycle logic to corporate budgets, finance leases, contracted compute demand and third-party credit support. In a fixed 37-firm technology cohort, five platforms contributed 95.2 percent of the capital-spending increase and accounted for 97.5 percent of positive operating funding gaps in 2026 H1. Cash investment absorbed 95.8 percent of platform operating cash flow; disclosed finance-lease acquisitions raise the share to at least 99.8 percent. Borrowing, payout adjustment and financing in kind accommodate expansion. Primary disclosures show how procurement commitments and guarantees extend financing capacity. A cash-flow lending model formalizes feedback between expected returns, borrowing capacity and investment. Observable resource bounds and investment weights connect the mechanism to aggregate exposure, showing how concentrated investment and shared credit support shape the macroeconomic transmission of the AI cycle.
